Fort Dunree, perched dramatically on a cliff edge overlooking Lough Swilly near Buncrana, is a historic military fort and museum offering stunning coastal views and a deep dive into Irish military history. Originally established in the early 19th century to guard against potential French invasion, Fort Dunree (Irish: Dún Fhraoigh meaning “Fort of the Heather”) was later modernized and used by the British and subsequently the Irish Defence Forces. Today, it serves as a heritage museum that showcases artifacts, weaponry, and exhibitions detailing the strategic significance of the fort, particularly during World Wars I and II.

The site also includes a network of coastal bunkers and restored gun batteries, along with a glass walkway and nature trails ideal for wildlife spotting and photography. An onsite café and gift shop complement the visit, and the fort’s cliffside location provides panoramic views of Inishowen and the Atlantic Ocean.
